Perfect Paint Picking...

Paintsamples

Today on GMT, we're talking paint!  If you want to avoid one of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating their homes, then take note:  SAMPLE YOUR PAINT COLORS BEFORE YOU COMMITT!

·1)

2 ways to sample paint: 1) paint directly onto the wall or use plastic or foam sample boards made for sampling paint. These poster-like plastic sample boards can be picked up at most paint stores. I got these from Benjamin Moore for $2.99 a sheet. I cut them in half to be able to sample more colors, but if you want to make a larger sample just use it as is. The larger the sample is, the easier it is to visualize in the room, but I think they are still big enough even if you cut them in half.

·2)

Tester set & mini-pots: These innovative "tester sets" can also be purchased at Benjamin Moore. They are completely re-usable. All you have to do is wash them out immediately after finishing your sample. Benjamin Moore has also created these mini-pots as a more cost effective way for people to test their paint colors before they buy. This keeps you from having to buy a quart of paint. They are available in most of their popular colors, but not their entire line. Benjamin Moore has nearly 4,000 different colors to choose from.

·3)   Analyze one color at a time. Don’t hold up multiple sample boards to compare. Look at each sample individually & compare with how it looks with your fabrics, flooring & trim.

·4)   Just because a paint color looked great in your neighbor’s house doesn’t mean that it will look good in your house. There are many factors that can change the look of paint from room to room. (i.e natural light, room dimension, trim & flooring colors & fabrics used in a room)

Wild With Style!

Zebra_setting

I just cannot get enough of animal prints!  I think it's just one of those things I will never get sick of.  I love the way they add drama to an otherwise boring color palette.  Zebra is one of my favs.  I used 2 huge tufted back chairs from Sherrill out of zebra in my family room.  The high contrast between the black & white is so simple, yet it does wonders for a blah room.  Many of you are wondering how much is too much animal print?  While I've seen rooms successfully carried out using a variety of colors & variations of differnet animal prints, I would say stick to one or two items per room of any bold print.  Too much could get confusing and very busy for the eye.  In the photo above, we're showcasing several ways to use zebra.  I wouldn't suggest using all of these pieces in one room, but one or two could help bring out your wild side ;-)

Fabulous Paint Finishes

Inganno_fresco

Today on Good Morning Texas we discussed new techniques in paint finishes for your home.  All of the gorgeous samples I used were provided by my good friends at Artifax.  We've worked with them for over 15 years & let me tell you .... they are incredible!  Kris Perry is a true artist & her work is just awe-inspiring.  Her husband James is a master at Venetian and other plaster techniques.

These techniques are not for the novice painter.  They are incredibly labor intensive!  The team at Artifax have spent years perfecting these techniques.  They are the crew to be copied!  Copying is the sincerest form of flattery, but do NOT try this at home yourself!  You will be thoroughly disappointed, not to mention exhausted.  This is one area where you definitely want to call in the professionals!

Some Inspiration for your bedroom...

Bluebedroomsetting

Get inspired!  Cool blues are perfect for any bedroom.  The calm colors help to create a relaxing restful environment.  Trendy?  I don't think so.  This color palette has major staying power.  We don't see the blue & chocolate brown color palettes going out of style any time soon.  The contrasting colors work so beautifully together.  Chocolate brown acts as a grounding color for the light blue tones.  The gorgeous upholstered suede bed in the photo above pairs wonderfully with the sumptuous blue & neutral linens.  See this room setting in person ~ it's located upstairs at our showroom in Frisco.  Just ask someone to show you to the "blue room" www.ibbdesign.com

My new favorite thing!

Orange_whiteottomans

These are a must-have for your home!  Functional, movable & so super stylish.  They can go just about anywhere in your home.  Place them in front of a fireplace, an entertainment center, or perched in a bare corner.  Use them in your master bedroom in front of your bed instead of a bench & you have "his & hers" places to sit.

Octagon_ottomans

Picture yourself having a group of friends over for a party & having them rave about your new ottomans!  Use them in pairs & offer your guests a comfy seat that they can pull up & join in on the fun.

Whiteleather_ottomans

They come in a variety of different styles, frame shapes & fabric options.  The tops of the white leather ones pictured above open to reveal a storage compartment.  Just about every furniture manufacturer is making these amazing bench ottomans now.  The perfect little addition to any space.

Simple Master Bedroom

MODEL-210WhiteDr-Sheldon-B-master1-med (2)

Calming serene colors create a peaceful retreat for this master bedroom.  Drama is present with the high contrast of the dark rich woods with the cool tones of the color palette.  The 4 poster bed draws your eye up and makes quite a statement in the room.  Keep it simple on the accessories.  Too much clutter will take away from the restful atmosphere.

Add some pop...

MODEL-Trent-B-liv1-med (2)

Take a monochromatic or neutral color palette from drab to fab!  Add a few simple pops of color to create some drama like we have in this cozy family room.  The builder white walls are brought to life by a sophisticated colorful print on the draperies hanging on simple wood rods & rings.  The fireplace is a great focal point, but you really take notice with the addition of the bright artwork.  Notice the ultra-functional red ottomans in front of the coffee table.  Small movable ottomans are one of my favorite "must-have" pieces!  We've added a few colorful throw pillows & some accessories to complete the look.  So easy to do!  Try some of these tricks in your family room for a quick makeover.
